“When I graduate college I am going to go to hair school.”
That is what I would tell people when they asked me what my plans were after college. I had no intention of working in the field I was studying in. I was a bit embarrassed that I wanted to go to hair school. I thought, though, if I had a degree I would get the “dumb hair dresser” wrap.
When I met my husband he encouraged me to become a college drop out. In most situations that would be a bad thing. However, it was one of the best things he could have done for me. He was so supportive of me going to hair school and promised me that, if I moved home to be closer to him, after we were married I would be enrolled in hair school. He kept his promise and I love him for it.
People always wonder how I became interested in the beauty industry. Growing up with 6 brothers wasn’t exactly the upbringing that would introduce a self proclaimed tomboy to being a hair stylist. I’m one of those “always did my friends hair” kind of story for sure. But, it goes deeper than that.
My mom has the thickest pony tail you ever did see. She wore her hair mid back most of my life. Each Sunday she would curl it beautifully for church. The rest of the week it was french braided back and wasn’t appreciated. As her children grew older we started noticing that she needed a change. I could honestly visualize what I wanted done with her hair but I didn’t have the know-how. For this reason, and many others, I wanted to become a stylist. I wanted to help others who were stuck in a rut with their hair as a security blanket.
The first time I did my mom’s hair after graduating school I was able to create the style I had visualized on her years before. It was an incredible transformation. I love my job(s) and I love helping people feel as amazing on the outside as they are on the inside.
I work from home in a newly finished salon. Come check it out and let me work some stylist magic!
